Drinking Coffee Meditation

Make it a daily practice to enjoy your morning cup of coffee (or tea) as a sacred ritual.  Give it your entire attention, making the coffee in silence, smelling the fresh grounds, pouring the steaming coffee into a mug, taking in the warm aroma.  If you add cream or milk, watch the colors gradually combining into a mocha colored elixir.

Once prepared, sit down in a comfortable place, and drink your coffee slowly, in silence. Close your eyes and experience the taste, the smell, the warm cup in your hands.  Enjoy this.  Be healed by this.  Allow your attention to stay with the experience of drinking your coffee until you have finished it.  If the mind wanders or starts to get busy, just gradually bring your attention back to your coffee, and to your senses.  Feel free to take in the present moment around you, the sounds in the room or in the distance, sunlight, a sunrise, the gradual alertness entering your body.

When you have finished drinking your coffee, you are ready to invite the day.
